Patterson Home - Wednesday Nov. 7, 2007

First of all I need to apologize for my lack of updating the site. The site was down for a while and then I just didn't get around to doing it. The others claim that it is because I haven't been winning for a while (and that might definately affect my motivation).
   Dave M., Ray A., Ronnie L., Cam P., & Mike P.
Colosseum - This was a long awaited game. You just can't go wrong with Days of Wonders games - they are all top notch!! The game lived up to its hype we thoroughly enjoyed the game and the game when down the last play. Ray for most of the game seemed to be trampled down by some of the unfortunate events but in the last two rounds of the game put it all together to hold a final event that housed 70 + spectators. Great game Ray!!

   Who's the Boss? - Marion (1st), Ronnie (2nd)
We have come to love the Sid Saskson games (Acquire & Sleuth) and we knew that this one would live up to the designer's quality. We weren't let down - they however was a much different game than we normally play. It was very active and aggressive. The battling for closing deals and running those deals made for a very interesting night. Cutthroat negotiating and deal breakers moves abounded but Marion and Ronnie serviced as the best of the bunch. Marion ran away with this one but Ronnie definitely understands the business of deal making. It was a fun night!!

   Acquire - Dave M. . (1st), Ronnie L. (2nd), Mike P. (3rd)
Well.... Dave did it!! And boy did he do it!! Dave ran away in Acquire with thousands more than the rest of us. It just seemed that each time something got merged Dave was getting cash. Ronnie came in second with 400 more dollars than me - now I wish I had sold Saxton for the 500 dollars.

   Princes of Florence - Russ D. (1st), Marion H. (2nd), Ray A. (3rd)
Well.... this was a runaway. Russ was far and away the winner. No one could catch him and every time someone made a move he had an answer. Marion and Ray made a late surge and caught Cam & I. Ray actual snuck by us on a tie breaker of money. The game took 3 hours again and we keep hoping that it will speed up.

   A full house!! - Russ D. , Dave M., Ray A., Marion H., Cam P., Emily, Abe I. & Mike P.
Betrayal at the House on the Hill - Winners (Russ, Cam, Marion, Ray, and Mike)
The usual exploring through the house was abruptly interrupted when Dave transformed from the sane Professor Longfellow to a RAVING MADMAN. Dave and his mad henchmen moved through the dark quarried of the house attacking anyone they could find. Cam & I were both killed early on, which reduced the team size greatly. Fortunately, Russ had found the Revolver in one of the rooms and used it multiple times to strengthen our attack on these coridors Patience and good rolls brought the Madman and his unruly fiends to their knees. Good prevailed once again.
   Coda - Emily (Twice)
It seemed that our new visitor caught on to the games that we taught her VERY quickly. She defeated Cam, Abe and I two times in a row at Coda. We quickly put this game away and moved to a new game hoping to break her winning ways.(See the Formula De results to see how successful this was)
   Formula De - Emily (1st), Cam P.(2nd), Abe I.(3rd), Russ D.(4th), Dave M.(5th - Crash), Marion H.(6th - Crash), Ray A.(7th - Body Damage), & Mike P.(8th - Body Damage)
The flag was dropped and the Formula I cars raced off from their pole positions. When the dust settled, all cars got off to good start except for Dave who stalled his engine. The pack weave back and forth pushing their frames and engine to the extremes. At one point, Dave was falling back due to his start so he geared up and attempted a straightaway that needed a perfect roll to catch up and sure enough Dave nailed the 20 roll to re-enter the pack. The bumping was taking an early toll on my car and in the fifth corner I found with so much damage that my car had to be taken from the track. As I took my helmet off and pulled myself through the window of my car in disgust Ray pulled off the track beside my as well due to damage. I heard Ray mumble something in anger and then shake his fist at Marion and Dave. While Ray and I were commiserating over our early exit, Marion and Dave spun out their cars in front of us. They were still in the race, but at least it wasn't going well for them. Meanwhile, the lead pack of cars, Emily, Cam, and Abe were crushing along hitting corner after corner perfectly (it was disgusting to watch). Oh ya Russ - Russ just kept cruising along passing Ray and I who were pulled over, and then blew past Marion and Dave while they are straightening out their cars in 1st gear. I guess it should be noted that not only did Emily win, she won with ease. With further questioning we found out that she owns 10 Formula De boards and she is related to Mario Andretti through her mothers side (so why doesn't Abe drive that good??).

   Russ D. , Cam P., Ronnie L., Abe I. & Mike P.
The Princes of Florence - Russ D. (1st), Ronnie (2nd)
This was our first attempt at this highly rated game. It seemed to play like a mix between Vegas Showdown and Puerto Rico. The further we got into the game we had those 'ah ha' moments of how we would do this differently next time. Russ and Ronnie had a nice setup going and they were working their Artisans hard for big "Work Value" to the very end. We definitely agreed that we would play that again soon.

   Formula De (2 laps) - Dave M. (1st), Marion H. (2nd), Abe I. (3rd), Ronnie L. (4th), Cam P. (5th), Mike P. (6th) & Ray A. (7th)
This 2 lap race was a battle of two groups, in the front group, Dave, Marion, Ronnie and Ray battled it out corner after corner. Ray lost his focus and hit a corner at a VERY fast speed (over shot by 9). Marion was very patient waiting for the right moment and sure enough it came as he went from the middle of the pack to the front. Dave broke away from the pack after the first lap as he rolled perfect rolls three corners in a row. Abe moved from the back group into the middle of the pack and had a few chances to be up with the big boys but the rolls just weren't going. Mike had engine issues for most of the race and never really did anything.
   Liar's Dice - Mike (1st), Marion (2nd), Cam (3rd)
This was also a big game with 7 people that means we started with 35 dice. Early bids were up to 17 of something. This game stayed quite even as everyone was losing dice. The final three players all had one dice left.

   Railroad Tycoon - Marion H.(1st), Ronnie L. (2nd)
Lets just say the game began in a very unusual way as Russ used $20,000 dollars to simply earn the right to play first. The game didn't become more normal as we played on though.... with Russ perceiving that all way lost it broke him free to basically reak havok on whoever he wanted at any cost because cost was no longer a concern. The ending even had a twist as Russ chose to ship goods down Ronnie's routes to catapult Ronnie into contention and cause stress to Dave and Marion.. Lets just summarize Russ's game strategy as.... Chaotic Evil..... Hey Russ it wasn't D&D!!!
Hey but lets not focus on Russ so much... Let talk about Marion - Marion seemed to be constantly shipping. He created a huge network on the west side of the mountains the goods just kept flowing and nobody got in his way. Well done Marion, but don't expect it to be that easy next time!!

   Dave M, Cam P., Daren T., Marion H. & Mike P.
   Pueto Rico - Mike P.
Finally, I won Pueto Rico.... it was a close game though. We were all within about 6 victory points of each other. Cam's corn strategy was a close second.
   Coda - Dave M.
   Dave out thought us all....

   Dave M, Marion H., Cam P., Ray A. & Mike P.
Sorry about the missed reports over the summer. We didn't stop playing I just stopped updating the site. Many of the other players believe that the lack of reports had more to do with my losing streak and not the fact that I was always out of town on vacation.
We did test out some new games though, Tigris & Euphrat, Rheinlander and Warrior Knights were three games that we tried a few times. We also played Vegas Showdown a few time and quick enjoy the Vegas experience in Vegas.
   Vegas Showdown -- Marion H.
Marion seem to have the money when it counted the most. He constantly out bid us and then strategically set us upon each other while he manipulated the game. It was quite masterful. Ray played this for his first time and came in third behind Cam, and infront of Dave and I.
   Formula De (Circuit #33) -- Dave M.
Well this was quite a race with lots of body work damage and even a close engine blow out. Cam led most of the race but missed only one corner late in the lap and Dave pounced upon his chance to take the lead. It was nicely played. The final placement went Dave, Ray, Mike, Cam and then Marion. Marion was driving his car just a little too hard and eventually spun out.

Hammond Home - Thursday May 31st, 2007

   D&D Caverns of Chaos --
The adverturing party set off from the keep looking for the smell of ork blood and the promise of great treasure. A days journey placed the party at the jungle like entrance to the Caves of Chaos (a wolf howls in the background at just the mention of the name). After hacking through the dense brush, a oval shaped ravine opened up with multiple caves at many different elevation levels.
The party chose to enter the nearest cave to the right at their same approximate elevation. It was a cave that they had entered before but left quickly due to the orc onslaught. The brave adventures entered again this time sending the hobbit, Big Mac, in first to check for traps and alarms. Unfortunately, while attempting to disarm the alarm, Big Mac tripped it. The party came to his rescue and found the narrow cavern flooding with orcs. 4 orcs coming from the right and 4 orcs coming from the left. The party strategically split into two defensive positions to keep the evil minions at bay. This worked effectively, with the help of the stun/sleep spell that Xyanderlin cast, and the intense fighting of McCoy. Aerindir, the Ranger, did strike a few orcs from a distance with his bow skills. Everyone, but Aerindir, took damage and a number of individuals, Xyanderlin (Mage), Camalin (Fighter) and McCoy (Priest) were knocked unconscious and needed a full day of rest.
The wounded party hid in an abandoned guards room for protection while Aerindir stood post. One small orc child and his mother were spotted placing food in the fireplace. Aerindir conversed with them and instead of fighting them, he allowed them and a number of others leave the cave peacefully. The entire cave was searched and looted for lots of gold, armor and weapons. A special 'glowing' shield was recovered from the large orc chieftain. We have yet cast an identifying spell to determine whether it is cursed or magic. The party took the loot and the wounded party members back to the keep and end the journey on this night there. Interesting enough... Big Mac, the thief, had more gold in his pockets when they got back to the Keep.

   Thurn & Taxis -- Russ D. & Cam P. (23 points)
It was a close game for 2nd, 3rd and 4th but the Team of Russ and Cam killed us. It wasn't a good combo to have the two cut throat gamers on the same team.
Acquire -- Marion by 10's of thousands.....
Marion manipulated the mergers and even the gaming ending to fully crush Russ and I. Russ did a very good job of making a comeback after getting off to a very slow start.

   D&D Caverns of Chaos --
We rolled up characters for Cam & I and then as a group we headed into the caverns of chaos. Unfortunately we didn't even make it into the caverns because of the attacks of the Orcs on the upper cliffs. After a well fought battle (by Russ, Dave & Cam) we scurried to the trees for cover but once again were suprised by the dog faced creatures. Another battle insued, all of this brought us at most 30 experience points and 20 silver.... was it worth it?
Russ why don't you edit this.... I don't know the character names....
   Sleuth Game #1 -- Mike P.
A poorly shuffled deck brought on information very quickly. This game started and finished in under 30 minutes.
   Liar's Dice -- Dave M.
The final two liars were Dave and I, Dave had 4 dice and I had 5 dice. Dave won five rounds in a row to elimate me without loosing a single dice. Nice Game Dave!!

Patterson Home - Wednesday May 16th, 2007

   Dave M, Marion H., Russ D. & Mike P.
Sleuth Game #1 -- No Winner
A null game was declared when we found out that someone had misrepresented the truth. The game of Sleuth then took on a real time feature as we interrogated each other until we determined the culprit -- Yes Watson, Dave was the guilty party,
"Oh ya... the Opal.... I thought it was the Diamond", Dave gasped while pleading that he was innocent.
   Sleuth Game #2 -- Marion H. and Mike P.
This game was quite quick and included many jabs at Dave concerning the accuracy of his data. We often helped clarify the difference between diamonds and opals. We had two winners because the key information was revealed for both parties simultaneously . Yes it was the Yellow Opal Pair!!
   Coda #1 -- Dave M.
Yes... you are reading this correctly - it is not a typo.... Dave is on the winners list!!! Great Job Dave!!! Keep up the good work (lots of sarcasm).....
   Coda #2 - Russ D.
   Liar's Dice #1 -- Dave M.
   Liar's Dice #2 -- Russ D.
Cleopatra & the Society of Arcitects -- Russ D. & Dave M. (Runner Up)
Two individuals were thrown to the crocodiles for their excessive use of corruption... can you guess who? Of course Marion (he is always heavy on the corruption) and to everyone's suprise I tied Marion for corruption and was thrown to the crocks with him. Dave threw us few jabs about the need for us to repent.
Final Note -- It was noted by Marion and I that throughout the night Dave and Russ were high fiving each other and making regular references to 'teaming up' on Marion and I. No offense was taken gentlemen but you don't want to awaken the giant in Marion and I and bring on our gaming wrath..

Patterson Home - Wednesday May 9th, 2007

   Dave M, Marion H., Cam P. & Mike P.
St. Petersburg -- Mike P. & Cam P. (Runner Up)
The final round came one turn too early for Marion or he would have crushed us with his Aristorats. But instead Cam and I planned it perfectly. The final count put Cam ahead by 4 over me but he had a 5 point deduction for holding a card at the end of the game..... ouch!!
   Sleuth -- Marion H.
Marion is the king of deduction -- no one has a chance to win this game when Marion is playing. Yes Watson, it was the Red Pearl Solitare that was stolen!!!
   Missed Ya Dobbins.....

Hammond Home - Tuesday May 8th, 2007

   Dave M, Marion H., & Russ D.
Dungeons & Dragons Level #1 Dungeon
It was an eventful night of Dungeon crawling which climaxed with a GIANT spider descending from the dark abyss above to surprise the band of explorers. Luckily the dice rolls were in their favor and Dobbins (the wizard) was able to cast a sleep spell upon the brute and the rest of the party hacked the spider into little pieces.

Patterson Home - Wednesday May 2nd, 2007

   Dave M. Russ D., Marion H., Cam P. & Mike P.
Liar's Dice - Tori P. (Nice Win.... Tor)
Vegas Showdown -- Russ D. & Dave M (Runner Up)
A couple of key purchases and a few very nice diamond designs on the casino floors put these boys far far ahead of the rest of us.
   Diamant -- Marion H.
St. Petersburg -- Mike P. & Russ D. (Runner Up)
This was Marion's first time with the game and he came in third , just one point behind Russ. Russ was able to break the tie by turning in 10 rubles into 1 point and Marion only had 2 rubles..... what a close finish.

Patterson Home - Wednesday April 25 , 2007

   Dave M. Russ D., Marion H., Cam P. & Mike P.
   Vegas Showdown --Mike P.
It was a slight (very slight) one point victory over Dave.M. This was the first time that anyone had played it and the general feeling was that it was definately a game that we could play many times.... It's VEGAS BABY!!!
   Drakon -- Marion H.
Marion is very tricky about how he lets information out to the rest of us, it is very calculated and always for his gaming advantage.
   Liar's Dice #1 - Marion H. (Kicked Butt - No lost dice)
   Liar's Dice #2 - Marion H. (Kicked Butt - One lost dice)
Liar's Dice #3 - Mike P. (Got lucky on two decisions..)
   Liar's Dice #4 - Russ D. (** Extended Game Notes)
(**This game has an asterix because the final winner was determined after the game by the voting members. Russ won the game but due to Cam's lack of understanding of the rules (or he was just sleepy), Cam was given a second attempt and in that moment Cam won. It was determined later that if Cam is staying up and playing with the BIG boys then he needs the same consequences for not paying attention as everyone else - thus the win was restored to Russ D. and it was also determined that in the future Cam is not allowed to invoke the "I'm only 9" excuse to replay an event or action.)
PS -- Russ, Welcome to the Winners.......

Patterson Home - Wednesday April 18 , 2007

   Dave M. Russ D. & Mike P.
Acquire -- Mike P. (It was a very competative game.)
Sleuth -- Mike P. (It is hard to mess with a geometry teacher on deduction!!)
Discussion about next week lead us to give out some assignments - Russ is reading rules for Euphrat & Tigris, Dave is reading rules on Reef Encounter and I am reading up on Aladdin's Dragons & Vegas Showdown.... We need two games nights a week.
Also Russ introduced the idea that a gaming event should be held 'every 5th Friday'. It sounded really good to everyone but our wives.
